Ever since the release of the Wii many have wondered when Nintendo were going to release an external hard drive. It's always been a case of "when?" and not "will they?" because of several factors which I'm kind enough to share with you all.USB ports: The Wii sports 2 USB ports on it's rear. What would these be for other than to connect external hard drives?
Memory was whack from the start: When everybody scoffed at the 512 MB of internal flash memory Nintendo quickly said you could delete Virtual console titles to make space for others and that you wouldn't have to pay to download them again. We were also told that we could transfer files between SD cards and the internal memory, but this proved slow and tedious. Very early on everybody realised that deleting virtual console titles and having to keep transferring them to an SD card was not practical and far from ideal in the long run.
Bolstering library: The Virtual console library is huge and still growing. Neo Geo games have been confirmed to be appearing on the Virtual console along with rumours of Sega Saturn games. Between NES, Turbo grafx, SNES, Mega Drive, Neo Geo and Nintendo 64 games, a hard drive is definitely neccesary. It's also been confirmed that retro PC platformer Impossible mission will be revamped and distributed digitally on Wii via the Wii shop. This means Wii will indeed play host to original content and new titles. 512 megs of flash memory won't cut it.
We are getting a hard drive people. We always knew Wii would get one eventually, it was always just a matter of when. It's been revealed that we will see new hardware at this years e3. My money's on a hard drive.
